A roots blower contains 2 intermeshing impellers which rotate within a housing.
Roots blowers are designed to produce a fixed volume of gas (usually air) per revolution of these impellers.
Tight tolerances during manufacturing and fine clearances between the impeller lobes and housing ensure that the volume of air which the blower moves is constant. The tight tolerances also mean that oil does not need to be used within the housing; as is the case with some other types of air blowers, meaning that contamination into the blower line is significantly reduced, or eliminated altogether where proper maintenance is in operation.
The volume of air that the blower can move correlates to the system pressure which is created from the resistance in the system. The resistance could be product in the pipeline which the blower is to move, or a head of water which the blower is aerating.
As the volume of air is consistent and designed to be ‘oil free’, it is effective for moving granular or pelletised materials at a steady rate through a pneumatic conveying system. The product is fluidised by the addition of the air, which makes it easier to move.
Roots blowers are used in many industries where powders, grains, pellets etc need to be moved within a production or sorting facility.
Typical applications are bakeries, breakfast cereal manufacturers, flour mills, pet food manufacturers, quarries, plaster board plants, plastic film manufacturers, plastic product makers, chip board and MDF manufacturing plants, pharmaceuticals.
Roots blowers can also be found on effluent treatment works, roadside sludge gulpers and excavators, backwash filter applications, as primary air blowers for furnaces and more.
They can be used on both pressure and vacuum applications.
